Shopping a 7×16 enclosed trailer against an 8.5×16 enclosed trailer is the most common size debate we hear on the lot in Douglas. Same length. Very different trailer. The extra 18 inches of width changes what you can load, what you can tow it with, and what you pay.

What the extra width actually buys you
On paper it is a foot and a half. Inside the trailer it is the difference between squeezing past a pallet and walking beside it.
- Pallets: A standard pallet is 40″ x 48″. Two side-by-side need an 8.5-wide box. They will not sit clean in a 7-wide.
- Side-by-sides / golf carts: Most UTVs fit a 7×16 by length. The 8.5×16 is the one that leaves a walkway, wall e-track, and room for a spare, cooler, or toolbox.
- Shop build-outs: Cabinets on both walls plus a center aisle almost always want 8.5′ wide.
- Cars: Neither size is a car hauler. If you are loading a passenger car, look at an 8.5×20 or 8.5×24.
Towing and truck match
Length is the same, so hitch height and tongue length feel familiar. Width and empty weight are what change the tow vehicle.
- A 7×16 tandem is the everyday half-ton trailer when it is not overloaded. Many F-150 / 1500 / half-ton SUVs handle it when payload and hitch ratings are honest.
- An 8.5×16 is heavier empty and catches more wind. It still tows with a properly rated half-ton for light cargo, but loaded shop builds, UTVs, and 7’6″ height packages are happier behind a three-quarter-ton.
Check three numbers on your door sticker before you fall in love with either size: towing capacity, payload, and hitch rating. Payload is the one people miss. Passengers and a toolbox in the bed count against it.
Price and what you get for it
An 8.5×16 costs more than a 7×16 in the same brand and package — more metal, more floor, more axle capacity on a lot of builds. You also tend to option the 8.5 with extra height, e-track, and electrical because people build it as a work trailer.
If the 7×16 already swallows the load, do not buy width you will not use. If you have ever loaded a 7-wide and wished you could open a door past the cargo, spend the money on the 8.5.
